It's a bit of a pain but you don't have a lot of options with the stock type shocks. Spring preload is set by us to the lightest setting. I have a '99 Softail and I stiffened the stock shocks and I could tell a difference when ridden over the same area as before the adjustment. Replacement Progressive Suspension wrenches are available as Part SW-784 from most Dealers and Accessory Stores and the Harley Davidson wrench is available as part 94455-89 from any Harley Davidson Dealer. Help a guy new to Harley's ease his mind. Just my 2 cents worth, but it wouldn't hurt to give the adjustment a shot. I know the shocks work backwards compared to traditional vehicle shocks, but it just makes no sense to me. I've pored over diagrams and cutaways of these shocks, and I still can't wrap my head around how this adjustment works. In the tradition of righty-tighty, lefty-loosey, how does turning the adjusting plate clockwise (righty-tighty!) decrease the preload on the springs? In my mind, that would be compressing the springs, increasing preload. I loosened the jam nuts, backed the preload adjuster plates all the way out, marked the 6 o'clock position, and turned each adjustment plate 4 full turns (For a 180 lb rider, per some chart I found with my google-fu). found on all shocks with a reservoir, either hose mounted or piggyback. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but this adjustment corrects the ride height after the preload is set, right?). For additional loads the preload adjustment can be changed with the attached. Even on the frame-side, the threaded shafts weren't equally adjusted as they go through the rubber grommets. Neither shock had the adjustment plates set equally. Last night, I jacked the bike up to fiddle with the shocks, and my theory was correct. I would nearly be bucked off the seat over fairly mild bumps. The ride was always a little rough, especially compared to a buddies 2006 Fatboy.
